Hakuba
白馬村
Go for 2–4 nights in Jan–Feb if you ski or board; in Jul–Aug for alpine hikes. Day-tripping from Nagano wastes the valley's spread-out bases.
Hakuba is a valley of seven-plus ski resorts below the Northern Japan Alps in Nagano Prefecture, about 2.5–4.5 hours from Tokyo by train or bus. Winter is the reason most people come: 10 m+ of snow at some resorts and Olympic downhill runs at Happo-one. In the green season the same lifts carry hikers and mountain bikers, and three clear lakes sit south of the village. Bases are spread along the valley, so where you sleep decides how you move.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Bases are far apart: check the walk from your bed to the lift before booking.
- The last bus from Nagano to Hakuba leaves at 20:30; a later arrival means a taxi or a Nagano night.
- Lift operations and shuttle routes change with snow and season: confirm on the resort's own site.
- Winter roads and car parks ice over; drive only with winter tyres and check conditions.
- Onsen etiquette: wash and rinse fully before entering the bath.
Very safe for tourists; the real risks are winter driving, off-piste terrain and altitude on the ridge. Carry a charged phone, tell someone your route, and check the day's avalanche and weather bulletin before going above the lifts.
