Ticonderoga is a small Adirondack town on the LaChute River between Lake George and Lake Champlain, built around a restored 18th-century fort and a pencil-factory past. Almost everyone arrives by car on I-87. The fort alone fills a morning or afternoon, the village adds two or three hours, and the rest of the region is a drive away.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: there is no local bus network and the fort, the village and the lake shore are 5–15 min apart by road. Fill the tank in town, because stations are sparse on the back roads. The Lake Champlain ferry links Route 74 with Shoreham, Vermont.

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are rural driving at night, deer on the road, winter ice and cold water on Lake Champlain. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
  • Fort Ticonderoga is open daily mid-May to mid-Oct only; outside that window the grounds are closed.
  • The Star Trek set tour runs on timed guided tours with a last tour in the late afternoon: book ahead in summer.
  • The Ticonderoga ferry is seasonal and takes only about 18 cars, so expect a wait on summer weekends.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads toward Hague and Crown Point; download offline maps.
  • Winter driving on Route 9N and I-87 needs snow tyres or all-season tread and daylight planning.
