The Adirondack Park is a 2.4-million-hectare mix of public Forest Preserve and private land, dotted with small villages. There is no single centre. Pick a base by what you want: Lake Placid for the High Peaks and Olympic sites, Lake George for a lake-and-boardwalk summer, Saranac Lake or Tupper Lake for a quieter middle, Old Forge for the western lakes. Two nights is a taste; four to five lets you hike, paddle and drive a scenic loop without spending the whole trip in the car.
