Miyakiみやき町

Skip Miyaki unless you have a specific reason to visit the shrine or park: it is a quiet town with one notable shrine and a park, best as a short stop on a Saga road trip.

Miyaki is a small agricultural town in eastern Saga Prefecture, 20 km east of Saga City and 30 km south of Fukuoka. Its main draw is the 1,300-year-old Chiriku Hachiman Shrine; the rest is rural scenery. Most travellers pass through on the Nagasaki Main Line or by car. A half-hour stop is enough.

Rules in force · 5
  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Japan ↗IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) are topped up with cash at station machines.
  • Japan ↗Smoking while walking is banned in most city centres; use designated areas.
  • Japan ↗Shinkansen bags 160–250 cm (L+W+H) need a seat reserved with the oversized-baggage area.

Watch out

Safety

Miyaki is a quiet rural town with very low crime. The main risks are traffic on national highways and summer heat.
  • Nakabaru Station has no staffed ticket office at all times; use a Suica/IC card or buy tickets at a machine.
  • Shops and restaurants are few and close early; bring snacks if visiting outside lunch hours.
  • The shrine grounds are open 24 h, but the office has limited hours (check).
