Moree is a cotton and farming town of about 9,300 people on the Mehi River in north-west New South Wales, at the junction of the Newell, Gwydir and Carnarvon highways. It sits between Narrabri and the Queensland border and is best used as an overnight break on a long drive, with the artesian hot-spring baths as the reason to stop rather than push on.

Watch out

Safety

Moree is a normal country town and fine for a night, but it has a reputation for street drinking and late-night trouble around the centre. Park off the street, keep to lit areas after dark and drive rather than walk the highway edges.
  • Summer days pass 35°C and the sun is harsh; do outdoor things before 10:00.
  • Highway patrol on the Newell Highway enforces speed and runs roadside drug and alcohol tests; stay under 110 km/h.
  • Long gaps between towns: fuel up in Moree before heading north or west.
  • Book coach and train seats ahead — drivers do not sell tickets on board.
