Coatepec is a coffee town in the Veracruz highlands, 13 km from Xalapa and about 1,250 m up, so nights are cool and the cloud forest above town feeds both the fincas and the orchid collections. The historic centre is small enough to walk in an afternoon, and most travellers use it as a calm base for Xalapa, Xico and the waterfalls rather than a destination in itself.
