Coatepec
Give Coatepec one full day and one night: coffee fincas, the orchid garden and the plaza, with Xalapa 25 min away as the airport and rail base.
Coatepec is a coffee town in the Veracruz highlands, 13 km from Xalapa and about 1,250 m up, so nights are cool and the cloud forest above town feeds both the fincas and the orchid collections. The historic centre is small enough to walk in an afternoon, and most travellers use it as a calm base for Xalapa, Xico and the waterfalls rather than a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Cloud-forest drizzle and slick cobbles: bring a light rain shell and shoes with grip.
- Altitude about 1,250 m: mild, but nights are cool year-round — pack a layer.
- Finca and orchid-garden visits often need a booked time slot; call or message ahead.
- Some trails above town are unmarked and muddy after rain: go with a local guide or stay on the main path.
- Card readers fail in small shops: carry pesos in small notes.
Coatepec is a small, calm highland town and the centre is fine on foot in the evening. The real risks are slick cobbles after rain, unlit trails above town and road traffic on the Xalapa highway: use the app or a radio taxi at night and keep to the main streets.
