Haapsalu is a small seaside resort on Estonia's west coast, about 100 km from Tallinn, chartered in 1279 and built around a bishop's castle and a wooden promenade. It is a spa and mud-bath town first and a sightseeing town second: the centre is compact and walkable, the sea is shallow and warms early, and most visitors come for a slow day rather than a checklist. One night covers it; the islands and Noarootsi are the reason to stay longer.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: castle to promenade is about 10 minutes. Buses from Tallinn run several times a day and take roughly 1 h 45 min–2 h; there is no working passenger rail to Haapsalu. Local taxis cover the spa hotels and the station area. A water taxi has linked the Grand Holm port with Österby in past seasons — check whether it is running before you plan around it.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a town of its size; the real risks are cold water, unlit paths to the spa hotels after dark and unmarked ruins at Kiltsi. Emergency number is 112.
  • Museum and castle opening hours are short and seasonal: check the day before you go.
  • The Kiltsi airfield and Ungru manor ruins are unmarked Soviet-era structures — do not climb the ruins.
  • Sea water is shallow and warms slowly; July and August are the only reliable swimming months.
  • Some spa and museum sites list phone-only booking; confirm by phone or email in low season.
