Jhansi is a rail junction in Northern Bundelkhand, not a destination in itself. Its one unmissable sight is the hilltop fort where Rani Lakshmibai held out in 1857, with Rani Mahal and the Government Museum a short auto ride away. Most travellers sleep one night, see the fort at opening, and continue to Orchha, Khajuraho or Gwalior. April to June is punishing: 40 °C+ days.

Getting around

Tempos (shared three-wheelers) run fixed routes at fixed fares and are the cheapest way around; auto-rickshaws have no meters, so agree the fare before you get in. There is a pre-paid auto booth at Jhansi Junction. City buses were discontinued; taxis are hired by the day through hotels or agents.

Safety

Jhansi is a normal Indian rail-junction city: petty theft is rare, but agree auto fares before boarding, expect stares if you are a woman travelling alone, and treat the summer heat as the real hazard.
  • Auto-rickshaws have no meters: fix the fare first.
  • Tempos to Orchha are packed far beyond their 8 seats — take a reserved auto instead.
  • April–June daytime heat is dangerous for sightseeing; start at dawn.
  • Government Museum and Rani Mahal close on Mondays (check).
  • Carry small rupee notes; card acceptance outside hotels is patchy.
