Paldiski is a small port town on the Pakri Peninsula, about 50 km west of Tallinn. It was a closed Soviet submarine base until 1994, and today it is a half-abandoned military landscape of bunkers, concrete and apartment blocks, with rocky coastline and two lighthouses at the peninsula tip. It is not a resort town and has almost no conventional sightseeing.

Getting around

No public transport in town; everything in the centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes. The lighthouse and cliffs are 4–5 km north along Majaka tee — walk, cycle, or take a taxi. A car helps for Leetse manor and the Pakri islands viewpoint.

Paldiski is a quiet small town and generally safe, but the real risks are the unfenced, unstable cliff edges on the Pakri Peninsula and derelict military buildings that are unsafe to enter.

  • Many former military buildings are derelict and unsafe to enter; some areas near the port are restricted.
  • The DFDS ferry to Kapellskär does not run every day and the schedule varies — check before planning around it.
