Gyeongju was the Silla capital for most of the first millennium, and its burial mounds, temples and observatory sit inside a small, low-rise town rather than a museum. One night covers the downtown cluster on foot and by bike; two nights add Bulguksa and Seokguram without rushing. It is a history stop, not a nightlife stop.

Getting around

Walk or bike the downtown cluster — rental is about ₩7,000 a day, return by 19:00. City buses cost ₩1,500 flat with no transfer; the #10 and #11 loop the main sights in opposite directions. Buses 10 and 11 also reach Bulguksa, then bus 12 climbs to Seokguram. There are no timetables posted at stops, so allow slack.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists, including solo walkers after dark in the lit downtown core. The real risks are bicycles and scooters on shared paths, unlit rural roads at night, and summer heat or heavy rain on a bike day.
  • Singyeongju (KTX) station is outside town: buses 50, 60, 61, 70, 203 and 700 run to the centre in about 15 min.
  • The old central Gyeongju station is closed — rail arrivals all use Singyeongju.
  • Buses take T-money and Busan Mybi cards but not all regional cards; carry a little cash.
  • Seokguram is a small grotto: no photography inside, and the last bus down leaves well before closing.
  • Summer brings heavy rain and 30°C+ days; a bike day in July or August is a sweat test.
