Gyeongju
경주
Give Gyeongju 1–2 nights, base in the downtown tumuli area, and rent a bike: the Silla sights are spread out and buses are slow.
Gyeongju was the Silla capital for most of the first millennium, and its burial mounds, temples and observatory sit inside a small, low-rise town rather than a museum. One night covers the downtown cluster on foot and by bike; two nights add Bulguksa and Seokguram without rushing. It is a history stop, not a nightlife stop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A slight bow with a 'annyeonghaseyo'; handshake with the right hand, left hand touching the right forearm; avoid: Hugs and cheek kisses with people you have just met
- Age and rank: Expect to be asked your age; it sets how people speak to you. Let the eldest sit and start first; avoid: Calling older people by their given name
- Handing things: Two hands for money, cards, gifts and drinks; avoid: Passing things with one hand to older people
- Subway: Quiet voices, bags off seats, queue at the marked lines; avoid: Priority and pink pregnancy seats, even when empty
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring fruit or a boxed gift; refuse once before accepting; avoid: Writing names in red ink — it is used for the dead
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees; bow at the main hall; avoid: Stepping on thresholds; loud talk; pointing at Buddha statues
- Numbers: Know that 4 is unlucky; buildings may show F instead of a fourth floor; avoid: Giving gifts in sets of four
- Sensitive topics: Listen; follow your host's lead; avoid: Comparing Korea with Japan or China casually; jokes about the North, the Japanese colonial era, or plastic surgery
Scams and watch-outs
- Singyeongju (KTX) station is outside town: buses 50, 60, 61, 70, 203 and 700 run to the centre in about 15 min.
- The old central Gyeongju station is closed — rail arrivals all use Singyeongju.
- Buses take T-money and Busan Mybi cards but not all regional cards; carry a little cash.
- Seokguram is a small grotto: no photography inside, and the last bus down leaves well before closing.
- Summer brings heavy rain and 30°C+ days; a bike day in July or August is a sweat test.
Very safe for tourists, including solo walkers after dark in the lit downtown core. The real risks are bicycles and scooters on shared paths, unlit rural roads at night, and summer heat or heavy rain on a bike day.
