Shymkent is Kazakhstan's third-largest city, in the warm south near the Uzbek border, on the old Silk Road caravan route. It has a busier bazaar and street-food culture than the northern cities and a noticeably milder climate. Most travellers pass through as the gateway to Turkistan and to the western Tian Shan foothills rather than staying for the city itself.
