Baengnyeong is South Korea's westernmost island, 4 h by ferry from Incheon and about 12 km from the North Korean coast. It is a nature and fishing island: 50 m silica cliffs at Dumunjin, a pebble beach, a natural sand airfield, and the Simcheong folklore site. There is no airport for tourists, no nightlife and few festivals, so the trip is the ferry, the cliffs and the seafood.

Getting around

Two local bus routes run to Bukpo-ri and Hwadong; cash fare about ₩1,100. The island is large and buses are infrequent, so a rental car or a taxi is the practical way to reach Dumunjin and Kongdol. A tour bus is the usual choice for groups.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime. The real risks are the sea crossing (wind and fog cancellations), slippery pebble and cliff paths, and the frontline location: follow military signage and carry cash.
  • The ferry can be cancelled in high wind or fog; build a spare day into the plan and keep the return buffer.
  • This is a frontline island near the Northern Limit Line: follow any military signage and do not photograph installations.
  • Bring cash; card acceptance is patchy outside the bigger pensions and cafés.
  • There is no tourist airport: the only scheduled access is the Incheon ferry.
