Baengnyeong Island
백령도
Go only if you have 2 nights to spare: the ferry from Incheon takes 3 h 40 min each way, and one night leaves no usable day on the island.
Baengnyeong is South Korea's westernmost island, 4 h by ferry from Incheon and about 12 km from the North Korean coast. It is a nature and fishing island: 50 m silica cliffs at Dumunjin, a pebble beach, a natural sand airfield, and the Simcheong folklore site. There is no airport for tourists, no nightlife and few festivals, so the trip is the ferry, the cliffs and the seafood.

Get around
Two local bus routes run to Bukpo-ri and Hwadong; cash fare about ₩1,100. The island is large and buses are infrequent, so a rental car or a taxi is the practical way to reach Dumunjin and Kongdol. A tour bus is the usual choice for groups.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A slight bow with a 'annyeonghaseyo'; handshake with the right hand, left hand touching the right forearm; avoid: Hugs and cheek kisses with people you have just met
- Age and rank: Expect to be asked your age; it sets how people speak to you. Let the eldest sit and start first; avoid: Calling older people by their given name
- Handing things: Two hands for money, cards, gifts and drinks; avoid: Passing things with one hand to older people
- Subway: Quiet voices, bags off seats, queue at the marked lines; avoid: Priority and pink pregnancy seats, even when empty
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring fruit or a boxed gift; refuse once before accepting; avoid: Writing names in red ink — it is used for the dead
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees; bow at the main hall; avoid: Stepping on thresholds; loud talk; pointing at Buddha statues
- Numbers: Know that 4 is unlucky; buildings may show F instead of a fourth floor; avoid: Giving gifts in sets of four
- Sensitive topics: Listen; follow your host's lead; avoid: Comparing Korea with Japan or China casually; jokes about the North, the Japanese colonial era, or plastic surgery
Scams and watch-outs
- The ferry can be cancelled in high wind or fog; build a spare day into the plan and keep the return buffer.
- This is a frontline island near the Northern Limit Line: follow any military signage and do not photograph installations.
- Bring cash; card acceptance is patchy outside the bigger pensions and cafés.
- There is no tourist airport: the only scheduled access is the Incheon ferry.
Very low crime. The real risks are the sea crossing (wind and fog cancellations), slippery pebble and cliff paths, and the frontline location: follow military signage and carry cash.
