Balloch sits on the south shore of Loch Lomond, 50 minutes by train from Glasgow. The village, the Shores shopping centre, the castle park and the Maid of the Loch paddle steamer fill a day. The quieter loch shore, Luss and the hills need a bus, bike or car, so most travellers use Balloch as a day trip or a single night rather than a week-long base.

Getting around

Walk between the village, the pier, Loch Lomond Shores and Balloch Castle park. Local buses link Alexandria, Luss and Balmaha; a level cycle path runs up the west shore to Tarbet. Trains run twice an hour to Glasgow on weekdays and Saturdays.

Watch out

Safety

Balloch is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk by day and evening. The real risks are the weather on the water and hills, the busy A82, and midges from late May to August.
  • Two trains an hour to Glasgow on weekdays and Saturdays; Sunday services start from Motherwell via Glasgow Central, so check the timetable.
  • The A82 is the main Highland road and is busy with traffic: cyclists should use the old B857 instead.
  • Balloch Castle itself is derelict and closed to the public; the country park around it is open and free.
  • Launching a motorboat or jetski on the loch needs advance registration with the national park and a fee at the slipway.
  • Some loch cruises and the island restaurant run May–September only.
