Veenkoloniën is the peat district of southeast Groningen: long straight canals dug from the 16th century, linear villages along them and open farmland between. Veendam (about 27,500 people) and Stadskanaal (about 20,000) are the two towns. The landscape is the sight; the museums and the heritage steam railway are the stops. It is a flat, quiet region best seen by car or bicycle, and one day covers it.

Getting around
Car is fastest: the N33 expressway runs north–south through the region, 20 min to Veendam and 30 min to Stadskanaal from Groningen. Bicycle is the better way to see the canals — flat, signposted cycle routes, often on separate paths. Buses (Qbuzz) link the villages but there is no direct bus between Veendam and Stadskanaal: you change in Nieuwe Pekela. The railway is only the seasonal steam line.

Safety
- No direct bus between Veendam and Stadskanaal — plan the change at Nieuwe Pekela or drive.
- The heritage railway runs a few days a week in summer and a few times a month in winter: check the timetable before you build a day around it.
- Museums keep short hours and close on some weekdays; check before travelling.
- Village restaurants and bars may be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Distances between villages look short on the map but are dull on foot; use a bike or car.
