Durgapurদুর্গাপুর

Skip Durgapur as a sightseeing stop: one night only if you land at RDP or break the Kolkata–Asansol run. The barrage is the one reason to go.

Durgapur is an industrial city in Paschim Bardhaman, planned in the 1950s around the Durgapur Steel Plant, with the City Centre as its commercial core. There is little conventional sightseeing; the Durgapur Barrage on the Damodar and the steel plant tour are the two things a visitor actually does. Most travellers pass through on the Grand Trunk Road or the Kolkata–Delhi rail line, or use Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport (RDP) at Andal.

  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • India ↗Apply for the e-visa only on the official government portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in); lookalike sites charge extra. Check the current rules, fees and how far ahead to apply.
  • India ↗Do not follow anyone who says your hotel is closed, the station ticket office is closed or a road is shut; use the prepaid taxi counter, the metro or an app car.
  • India ↗Carry Indian rupees in small notes (10, 20, 50, 100); change for 500 is often refused.
  • India ↗Parts of the Northeast, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and all border belts need a Protected or Restricted Area Permit or an Inner Line Permit for foreigners; check before you book the route.

Arrive & move

Getting around

No metro and no reliable city bus network. Yellow-and-blue Ambassador taxis and auto-rickshaws wait at the railway station and fixed stands but run on negotiated flat rates, not meters — agree the fare before you get in. App cabs and bike taxis (Ola, Rapido) work in the centre. For the barrage, the plant or Andal airport, hire a car for the day.

Watch out

Safety

Durgapur is a working industrial city and generally calm for visitors. The real friction is transport: un-metered taxis and autos, so fix the fare first, and keep to lit roads after dark.
  • Agree taxi and auto fares before departure; meters are not used.
  • The steel plant needs a permit from the administrative building outside the main gate — arrange it before you travel.
  • Monsoon flooding and water release at the barrage: stay behind the railings and off the lock-gate footbridge when gates are open.
  • Summer heat and humidity Apr–Jun; carry water and plan indoor stops midday.
  • Industrial air quality is poor in patches; sensitive travellers should note it.
