Dhanbad is India's coal capital, a working industrial city in Jharkhand with no airport and no sightseeing core. What it has is the Jharia coalfield, a mining-research campus and a ring of dams, hot springs and picnic spots 14–54 km away. Most travellers pass through on a train, or use it as a one-night base for Maithon and Panchet.

Getting around

Autos and cycle rickshaws cover the centre cheaply; agree the fare before you get in. Hired cars and taxis wait at Dhanbad Junction around the clock and are the practical way to reach the dams and coalfield sites. City buses and shared autos run to neighbouring towns but are crowded.

Safety

Dhanbad is a working industrial city, not a tourist town: petty theft and overcharging are the usual problems, and the coalfield roads and open pits are the genuine hazard. Women travelling alone should expect stares; take hired cars after dark rather than walking.
  • Mine visits need advance written permission from Bharat Coking Coal Ltd; without it, no entry.
  • Coalfield roads have open pits, spoil heaps and heavy truck traffic: do not walk into the workings.
  • Summer heat (38–39 °C in April–May) and monsoon flooding (Jul–Aug) are the real seasonal risks.
  • Air quality in the coalfield belt is poor; anyone with breathing problems should limit time outdoors.
  • Check train days: several Kolkata and Delhi services do not run daily.
