Deoghar is a Shiva pilgrimage town in Jharkhand, built around the Baidyanath temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Most visitors come for darshan and leave; the surrounding hills and ashrams fill a second day. It is a working temple town, not a resort: expect crowds, simple food and cheap rooms.

Cycle rickshaws and shared autos cover the centre; a reserved auto or hired car for a half-day of sights runs roughly ₹500–1,000 (2026 estimate). Jasidih Junction, on the Howrah–Delhi main line, is 7 km away by branch train or shared auto. Roads are narrow around the temple — walk the last stretch.

Safety

Safe for tourists in the ordinary sense; the real risks are Sawan crowds, heat in Apr–Jun, monkeys at Tapovan and Trikut, and touts selling 'fast-track' darshan — use the official counter only.
  • Sawan (Jun–Jul): more than 5 million pilgrims visit during Sawan, and rooms, trains and temple queues are overwhelmed — check the pilgrimage calendar and do not come casually then.
  • Temple queues can run hours at festival times; entry rules and what you may carry inside are set locally — check at the gate before you join the line.
  • Monkeys at Tapovan and Trikut snatch food and bags; keep nothing loose.
  • Groundwater is the main supply: drink sealed bottled water only.
  • Trikut ropeway and hill paths close in heavy rain; check locally before going.
