Yetman is a hamlet of about 200 people on the Macintyre River in New England, 30 km south of the Queensland border and 71 km from Goondiwindi. There is no taxi, no bus you can rely on, no bank and no ATM. It works as a single overnight on a driving route, or as a base for river camping and the national parks nearby. Without a car you cannot get here or leave.

Getting around

Private car is the only practical option: no taxi and no local bus. The village is walkable in 10 minutes. Fuel is at the Yetman General Store (M–F 9:00–16:00); the next fuel is Boggabilla 62 km, Texas (Qld) 42 km, Warialda 85 km or Inverell 118 km. A weekly coach between Inverell and Moree via Goondiwindi has served Yetman, but seats are booked by phone only — treat it as check and do not build a trip on it.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime and a small, quiet village. The real risks are distance, heat, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and driving unsealed roads after rain.
  • No banks and no ATMs in Yetman. The General Store takes EFTPOS with a $10 (≈ US$7) minimum and gives no cash out.
  • Fuel is limited to store hours; arrive with a full tank if you plan to drive the parks.
  • Unsealed roads and river crossings can close after rain — check road conditions before leaving the highway.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy outside the village; download maps and tell someone your route.
  • Long drives between towns with no services: carry water, food and a spare tyre.
