Haenam is South Korea's southwestern land's end: a rural county of temples, beaches and reed fields, not a city. Daeheungsa temple on Duryunsan and the Ttangkkeut headland are the two anchors; everything else is spread across a county 44 km wide. Without a car you see one anchor per day at best, so most travellers give it one night between Mokpo and Jindo, or skip it.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: the county runs 44 km east–west and 55 km north–south, and sights sit on National Roads 13, 18 and 77. Intercity buses reach Haenam town, but local buses to Daeheungsa, Ttangkkeut and Mihwangsa are infrequent — check times at the terminal the day before. Taxis exist in town but are expensive for cross-county runs.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are rural roads, unlit coastal driving at night and thin bus schedules. Keep 112 and 119 saved, and 1330 (≈ under US$1) for English help.
  • Local buses to temples and the coast run a few times a day; missing the last one means a taxi or a long walk.
  • Part of Songpyeong Beach is a military area with restricted public access.
  • Coastal roads are dark and unlit at night; avoid driving them after drinking.
  • Temple and garden hours change with season — confirm before a long drive.
