Ruili瑞丽
Two nights is enough: one for the border market at Jiegao, one for the pagoda and hot springs. Skip it if you want classic Yunnan scenery.
Ruili is a county-level city in western Yunnan on the Myanmar border, opposite Muse. It is China's main land crossing into Myanmar, a jade and border-trade town, and the birthplace of the Chinese Dai. The draw is the border experience and Dai and Jingpo culture: the Jiegao gate and jade market, the Jiele Golden Pagoda, the One Tree Forest banyan, hot springs and the night market. Most travellers reach it via Mangshi or Baoshan, not directly from Kunming.

- China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
- China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
- China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk. City buses run about 06:00–21:30 for ¥1–2; a bus to Jiele Pagoda leaves from Ruili 5 Road every 15–30 min, 07:00–18:10, ¥2. Taxis start at ¥8 with a per-km surcharge; confirm the meter. Bicycle rental from about ¥20 a day; shared-bike coverage is patchy outside the centre, so check the app before you rely on it.
