Ruili is a county-level city in western Yunnan on the Myanmar border, opposite Muse. It is China's main land crossing into Myanmar, a jade and border-trade town, and the birthplace of the Chinese Dai. The draw is the border experience and Dai and Jingpo culture: the Jiegao gate and jade market, the Jiele Golden Pagoda, the One Tree Forest banyan, hot springs and the night market. Most travellers reach it via Mangshi or Baoshan, not directly from Kunming.

Scams and watch-outs
- Independent tourist crossings into Myanmar are often restricted or need special permits, and the gate can close at short notice: check current policy with the Chinese authorities before planning any crossing.
- Jade and jewellery shops in the border zone: agree the price and get a receipt; disputes are hard to resolve after you leave.
- Pickpockets on crowded buses and in markets.
- Monsoon rain May–Oct can flood roads and cancel buses; build in slack.
- Some taxi phone numbers and listings online are outdated: use Didi or a metered taxi from a stand.
Ruili is a quiet border town and generally safe by day. The real issues are the international boundary itself, monsoon roads, pickpockets in markets, and jade purchases you cannot undo.
