Liberec is a former textile city of about 103,000 people in the Jizera Mountains, 1 h 5 min by bus from Prague's Černý Most. Its draw is the 1960s hyperboloid tower on Ještěd, a compact neo-Renaissance square, and the Jizera cross-country trail network. Two nights covers the city and the mountain; add a third for hiking or skiing.

Getting around

Trams and buses run from the Fügnerova hub; a 60-minute single ticket is 24 Kč and a one-day pass 100 Kč. Tram 3 goes to Horní Hanychov for Ještěd, and the narrow-gauge line continues to Jablonec nad Nisou. The railway station is 1 km southwest of the centre with the bus station on its east side. For a day crossing into Germany or Poland, the Euro-Nisa network ticket covers trains and most buses in the Liberec region, Upper Lusatia and the Zgorzelec area for one day (350 Kč one person, 510 Kč two, children included).

Watch out

Safety

Liberec is a calm regional city; the real risks are mountain weather on Ještěd, unlit trails after dark, and pickpockets around the bus station. Keep to marked paths and carry a layer.
  • The Ještěd cable car has been out of service since a 2021 accident; bus 79 runs from Horní Hanychov to a hill car park, then it is a 20-minute walk to the top.
  • Liberec Castle and the Church of St. Anthony the Great have no public interior access; do not plan around going inside.
  • Mountain weather on the Ještěd ridge can differ from the city: check the forecast before you set off.
  • Weekend buses to Bedřichov and the Jizera trailheads can fill in ski season; go early (check).
