  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
  • East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
  • East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
  • Djibouti ↗Buy the e-visa on the official portal before booking non-refundable trips; a visa on arrival paid in US dollar cash also exists but check it for your passport.
  • Djibouti ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route, including if you arrive from Ethiopia.
  • Djibouti ↗Plan outdoor trips for the cool season (roughly Nov–Feb); summer heat is a medical risk.
  • Djibouti ↗Stay away from the Eritrean border area in the far north (Ras Doumeira, Khor Angar); governments advise against all travel there.
  • Djibouti City area ↗From about May to October, plan excursions for the first hours of the day and carry more water than you expect to need.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Djibouti City is a small port town on a peninsula, with a compact centre around Place Ménélik and the Marché Central. Sights are few and close together; the heat is the real constraint, and from about June to September afternoons are dangerous outdoors. The trips that go wrong walk at noon, carry big bags through market streets, or plan the lakes as a day out from the city. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; Lac Assal and the Gulf of Tadjoura are trips away from one kept bed.

Fits

  • Short stopovers
  • Sea-food and market trips
  • Travellers heading to the lakes with a driver

Does not fit

  • Summer travellers (Jun–Sep)
  • Strollers and wheelchairs (broken pavements)

Don't confuse
Djibouti is both the country and the city; the city sits on a peninsula in the Gulf of Tadjoura, and the airport is at Ambouli, south of the centre.

  • Marché Central: Market and mosque cluster: go at 07:30–09:30, before the heat and before the khat afternoon.
  • Haramous corniche: Sunset cluster: the seafront promenade and hotels on the eastern shore; go after 16:30 and take a taxi both ways.
  • Plateau du Serpent: Residential cluster south of the centre: quieter streets, embassies and small restaurants; a calm evening walk after 17:30.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • Sea-food at low prices
  • Early-morning markets
  • Sea breeze at sunset

You will hate

  • Extreme heat
  • Few shaded rest points
  • Sparse public information

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster in the morning; taxi between clusters at any other time.
Passes
No pass. Agree the taxi fare before you get in; a half-day rate is common for trips outside the centre.
Last trains
No rail or metro constraint; taxis run into the evening and are harder to find late at night.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

From about May to October do not plan outdoor walking between 11:00 and 16:00; move by taxi and keep water with you.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding culture; keep the big bag at the Djibouti hotel for any trip to the lakes.
Dead zone
Late flights: ask the hotel to hold bags and for a shower room; many do for a small fee.

Survive

Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.

Safety

  • Heat: carry water, cover your head, and plan midday indoors; dehydration comes quickly.
  • Do not photograph the port, the airport, military bases or government buildings.
  • Petty theft occurs around markets and the port area: keep valuables out of sight and take a taxi after dark.
  • Save your hotel's number and check your government's advice page for the emergency numbers to use.

Red lines

  • Do not photograph the port, the airport, military sites or government buildings.
  • Ask before photographing people; do not photograph people chewing khat without asking.
  • Dress modestly and cover shoulders and knees at the mosque.

Practical

  • French and Arabic are the official languages; French works best with hotels and taxis.
  • Bottled water only; carry more than you think you need.
  • Khat afternoons slow many shops from about 13:00.
