Djibouti City is an early-morning and after-sunset town: do the markets and the mosque before 10:00, sit indoors from midday, and come between November and February when the heat is bearable.

Djibouti City is a small port town on a peninsula, with a compact centre around Place Ménélik and the Marché Central. Sights are few and close together; the heat is the real constraint, and from about June to September afternoons are dangerous outdoors. The trips that go wrong walk at noon, carry big bags through market streets, or plan the lakes as a day out from the city. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; Lac Assal and the Gulf of Tadjoura are trips away from one kept bed.

JIB to Place Ménélik: one hotel-booked or licensed taxi, 15–35 minutes — the risk is not the ride but a flight that lands in the small hours and a hotel with nobody at the desk.

Get around

Walk inside a cluster in the morning; taxi between clusters at any other time.

Passes
No pass. Agree the taxi fare before you get in; a half-day rate is common for trips outside the centre.
