Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovin…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Romania ↗Romania is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Romanian sources for your passport.
  • Romania ↗Drivers need an electronic road vignette (rovinieta) on national roads; rental cars normally include it, but check.
  • Romania ↗Brown bears live in the Carpathians and sometimes enter towns and roadsides: never feed or approach them, and follow local warnings.

Timișoara is Romania's fifth-largest city and the informal capital of the Banat, 10 km from its own airport and about 3 hours by road from Belgrade and Budapest. The historic core is compact and walkable: Victory Square, Union Square and Liberty Square sit within 15 minutes of each other, with the Bega river and its parks just south. Two nights covers the squares, the Revolution Memorial, the Museum of Banat and a slow café morning; a third day adds the Village Museum or a day trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable; trams, trolleys and buses cover the rest, with single tickets around 3 lei (check). Taxis run 15–50 lei across town — insist on the meter and use a licensed company or Bolt/Uber. Bikes work well on the Bega towpath.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Cetate (city centre)

Between the three squares; walk to everything, best for a first visit.

Iosefin

South of the centre near the Bega; quieter, cheaper, 15–20 min walk in.

Fabric

East of the centre around Traian Square; characterful but keep an eye on valuables at night.

Watch out

Safety

Timișoara is generally safe for visitors. The real risks are unlicensed taxis, pickpockets around Traian Square at night, and summer heat — use licensed cabs and keep bags zipped in crowds.
  • Use licensed taxis with the oval sticker; refuse drivers who approach you on the street.
  • Traian Square and Fabric are best avoided after dark.
  • Tram and bus timetables are unreliable — allow slack.
  • Zero alcohol tolerance at the wheel; rovinieta vignette needed if you drive out of town.
