Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Changchun is the capital of Jilin Province and the centre of China's car industry, a planned city of broad avenues and squares laid out under Japanese occupation, when it served as Hsinking, capital of the puppet state of Manchukuo (1932–1945). It is not a major tourist destination: the draw is that period's architecture and the palace of Puyi, the last emperor, plus a strong film-industry museum. Most travellers pass through on the high-speed line between Harbin and Shenyang, and one full day covers the core.

Getting around

Metro and light rail (lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 as of 2024) cover the centre; lines 1, 3 and 4 serve Changchun station, lines 2 and 6 serve Changchun West. Taxis are cheap and the usual choice: flagfall ¥5 for 2.5 km plus a ¥1 fuel surcharge, then about ¥1.30 per 0.5 km. Buses cost ¥2 but are hard to use without Chinese. Trams 54 and 55 run in the west; a themed tram ride is ¥88 daytime / ¥118 at night, booking required.

Watch out

Safety

Changchun is a low-crime city and the main risks are practical: winter cold, taxi meters at the airport, and traffic. Keep the police and tourist hotline numbers saved.
  • Winters are long and very cold: plan indoor sights and short taxi hops, not long walks.
  • Airport taxi drivers often refuse the meter and ask ¥100 (≈ US$14) or more; the coach at ¥20–30 (≈ US$3–5) is the reliable fallback.
  • Have your destination written in Chinese for taxi drivers; English addresses rarely work.
  • Do not cycle: cycle lanes are not separated from traffic and roundabouts are hostile.
  • Unlicensed motorcycle taxis carry passengers; if there is an accident you have no cover.
