Give Changchun 1–2 nights for the Manchukuo palace and the film museum, or skip it: it is an industrial capital, not a sightseeing city.
Changchun is the capital of Jilin Province and the centre of China's car industry, a planned city of broad avenues and squares laid out under Japanese occupation, when it served as Hsinking, capital of the puppet state of Manchukuo (1932–1945). It is not a major tourist destination: the draw is that period's architecture and the palace of Puyi, the last emperor, plus a strong film-industry museum. Most travellers pass through on the high-speed line between Harbin and Shenyang, and one full day covers the core.

Taxis are cheap and the usual choice: flagfall ¥5 for 2.5 km (1.6 mi) plus a ¥1 fuel surcharge, then about ¥1.30 per 0.5 km (0.3 mi). Buses cost ¥2 but are hard to use without Chinese. Etiquette

Scams and watch-outs
- Winters are long and very cold: plan indoor sights and short taxi hops, not long walks.
- Airport taxi drivers often refuse the meter and ask ¥100 or more; the coach at ¥20–30 is the reliable fallback.
- Have your destination written in Chinese for taxi drivers; English addresses rarely work.
- Do not cycle: cycle lanes are not separated from traffic and roundabouts are hostile.
- Unlicensed motorcycle taxis carry passengers; if there is an accident you have no cover.
Changchun is a low-crime city and the main risks are practical: winter cold, taxi meters at the airport, and traffic. Keep the police and tourist hotline numbers saved.
