  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Vancouver, Washington sits on the north bank of the Columbia, directly across from Portland, Oregon — a different city from Vancouver, BC, about 300 mi north. It is the fourth-largest city in Washington and one of the oldest European settlements in the Pacific Northwest, built around Fort Vancouver from 1824. Most travellers see it as a half-day add-on to Portland or a cheaper bed near PDX; the historic core and the riverfront are the reason to stop.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

C-TRAN runs the local buses: $1.80 within Clark County, $2.50 to the Vanport and Parkrose/Sumner MAX stations, $3.85 express to downtown Portland, with transfers to TriMet. The Hop FastPass card works on C-TRAN and TriMet. Downtown, the waterfront and Fort Vancouver are walkable; a car helps for the lake parks and the gorge.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: 30–45 min

C-TRAN express bus to downtown Portland, or Amtrak from Vancouver station

Cross the river for the day; the express fare transfers to TriMet.

Columbia River Gorge / Stevenson

go

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

SR-14 east along the Washington bank by car

Waterfalls and gorge viewpoints on the Washington side; a car is the practical option.

Washougal

go

Door to door: 30–40 min

SR-14 east, or C-TRAN to Camas/Washougal

Gateway to the western gorge and the Washougal River.

Woodland

caution

Door to door: 30–40 min

I-5 north, about 30 min

Mostly a stop for the Mount St. Helens area; little in town itself.

Kelso and Longview

caution

Door to door: 45–60 min

Amtrak Cascades to Kelso, or I-5 north

Better as a rail stop than a day out; Longview is 15 min further.

Centralia

caution

Door to door: 1–1.25 h

Amtrak Cascades from Vancouver station

Outlet mall and a small historic downtown; pair with the train.

Ilwaco and the Long Beach Peninsula

overnight

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

US-101 and SR-4 west by car

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep on the coast.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Esther Short Park

Walk to the waterfront, Fort Vancouver and the Amtrak station; the pick for one night without a car.

Vancouver Waterfront

Newer riverfront hotels and restaurants; 10–15 min walk to the historic sites.

Hazel Dell / I-5 corridor

Cheaper chain hotels north of downtown; you need a car or C-TRAN buses.

East Vancouver / Fisher's Landing

Suburban, near the SR-14 and I-205 junction; best if you are driving to the gorge.

Watch out

Safety

Generally safe, with the usual downtown-after-dark caution around Esther Short Park and the transit stops. The bigger risks are wet roads, dark winter evenings and confusing this city with Vancouver, BC.
  • Vancouver, WA is not Vancouver, BC — check the airport code before you book.
  • Greyhound and FlixBus do not stop in Vancouver, WA; you transfer in downtown Portland.
  • Winter is wet and dark by 16:30; plan indoor sights.
  • Some Fort Vancouver buildings have seasonal hours — check the NPS site before you go.
