Vancouver, Washington
Vancouver, WA
Give it one full day, not a base: Fort Vancouver, Officers Row and the waterfront on foot, then sleep in Portland or push east to the gorge.
Vancouver, Washington sits on the north bank of the Columbia, directly across from Portland, Oregon — a different city from Vancouver, BC, about 300 mi north. It is the fourth-largest city in Washington and one of the oldest European settlements in the Pacific Northwest, built around Fort Vancouver from 1824. Most travellers see it as a half-day add-on to Portland or a cheaper bed near PDX; the historic core and the riverfront are the reason to stop.
