  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Beaverton is a western suburb of Portland in Washington County, about 20 minutes from downtown by car and roughly 30–40 minutes by MAX light rail. It is an economic centre for the county, home to Nike's world headquarters, and mostly a place people live and work rather than visit. Its useful travel role is as a cheaper, quieter base with easy MAX access to Portland, plus a handful of parks, malls and a strong farmers market.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

TriMet MAX Blue Line links Beaverton Transit Center with downtown Portland and Hillsboro; the Red Line continues to the airport. The WES commuter rail runs to Wilsonville via Tigard and Tualatin on weekdays. Local buses (including frequent Route 57 along TV Highway, 24/7) fill the gaps. Distances between malls and parks are long: a car or bike makes the suburb work, and parking is usually free.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old Town / Beaverton Central (around SW Broadway and the Round)

Walkable to the farmers market, library and MAX; best if you want to leave the car parked.

Canyon Rd / Hwy 217 corridor

Chain hotels with free parking and quick freeway access; good for drivers.

NW 158th Ave / Greenbrier (near US 26)

Newer mid-range hotels, close to Nike and the tech corridor; car needed.

Washington Square area (south, near Tigard)

Mall-side hotels and more dining; MAX is not at the door, so plan on a bus or car.

Watch out

Safety

Beaverton is a low-risk suburb; the real annoyances are wet winter driving, rush-hour traffic and long, dark, poorly lit walk routes between malls and hotels. Use normal city sense around transit centres at night.
  • Rush hour on US 26 and Hwy 217 is slow; add 20–30 min to any drive toward Portland between about 07:00–09:00 and 16:00–18:30.
  • MAX and buses run less often late at night; check the last train before a late dinner in Portland.
  • Winter is wet and dark by 17:00; summer can hit the mid-30s °C for a few days.
  • Nike's campus is a corporate site, not a public attraction: no general visitor access.
