Skip Bedford as a base: it is a Halifax suburb, 20–30 min from downtown. Go only for the waterfront walk, Scott Manor House or a cheaper motel night.
Bedford is a suburban community of about 24,000 at the north end of Bedford Basin, part of the Halifax Regional Municipality since 1996. It has one historic house, a waterfront trail and two malls. Almost everything a visitor wants is in Halifax, 20–30 minutes south, so treat Bedford as a half-day or a cheap bed, not a destination.

Halifax Transit routes 66, 80, 81, 82, 86, 89 and 90 serve Bedford; more routes connect at Cobequid terminal in Lower Sackville. A single ride is about $3 (check the current fare). The community is spread along the Bedford Highway, so a car or bike makes the day much easier; taxis are easy to find.
