Its downtown waterfront, Alderney Landing and nearby lakes make a compact visit; larger shopping areas and many neighbourhoods are spread out. For most visitors, a ferry trip from Halifax is enough. Choose Dartmouth as a base when your plans are centred here or you have a car.

Getting around

Halifax Transit buses and ferries cover the central area. The ferry runs every 30 minutes and every 15 minutes at weekday rush hours. Bus journeys between neighbourhoods can take substantially longer than driving; check routes and schedules before setting out. Two toll bridges connect Dartmouth with Halifax.
