South Tangerang is a Jakarta dormitory city in Banten province, not a tourist town. It is a spread-out group of suburbs — Serpong, BSD City, Bintaro, Ciputat, Pamulang — with malls, golf courses, a water park and commuter rail into the capital. Come for a bed near the office parks, a mall day, or a cheaper base while you work in Jakarta. Come for old streets, temples or beaches and you will be disappointed.

Getting around
No single centre. Taxis and ride-hailing (Blue Bird, Grab, Gojek) do the work; angkot minibuses cover local routes for Rp2,000–5,000 but have no fixed stops — say "Kiri!" to get off. The green KRL commuter line links Serpong and four other stations to Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta; Transjakarta BRT runs to BSD City and Ciputat.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
BSD City / Serpong
Planned new town: malls, hotels, water park, Eka Hospital. Best if you have business here.
Bintaro Jaya
Mall, green space and commuter station; the most convenient pocket for Jakarta day trips.
Alam Sutera
Hotel cluster near the toll road, 30–45 min to the airport outside rush hour.
Ciputat / Pamulang
Cheaper, busier, less geared to visitors; use only for price.

Watch out
Safety
- Traffic is the main cost: allow 2 h+ to CGK in rush hour.
- ATM skimming and distraction theft are reported around malls; use bank-branch or camera-monitored ATMs.
- Flooding closes roads in the wet season (Nov–Mar).
- Angkot routes are not signposted; ask a local before boarding.
- Many sights are inside private estates with their own gate rules.
