Narva
Go for one night, not two: the castle and bastions fill a half-day, and the border river is the point. Skip it if you want a beach or a bar scene.
Narva is Estonia's easternmost city, sitting directly on the Russian border across the river from Ivangorod. Almost everything worth seeing is inside a 15-minute walk: Hermann Castle and its museum, the 17th-century bastions, the Kreenholm factory island and the Orthodox cathedral. The city was rebuilt after 1944, so expect Soviet blocks rather than old-town streets. Come for the border geography and the castle, stay one night, and pair it with Narva-Jõesuu or Sillamäe on the coast.

- Narva has Estonia's highest recorded rate of violent and property crime; avoid unlit side streets and late-night bars.
- Racist harassment of visibly non-white visitors is a documented risk here; keep to central, lit streets.
- The Ivangorod bridge is open to pedestrians only; vehicle traffic has been closed since the war in Ukraine began.
- Do not attempt the border without checking current rules: visa and crossing status change.
