Jõhvi is the transport hub of Ida-Viru county and the administrative centre of Estonia's north-east, 160 km from Tallinn and 50 km from Narva on the main Tallinn–Saint Petersburg road and rail line. Most travellers pass through it on the way to Narva, Sillamäe or the coast at Toila. The town itself is small: a 13th-century fortress church with a museum in its cellar, an 1895 Orthodox church, a Stalinist town hall and a metal hedgehog statue. Two to four hours on foot covers the centre; use it as a base only if you are working through the oil-shale towns or need a cheap bed near the bus station.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Local buses are shared with Kohtla-Järve and mostly run along Rakvere road towards Tartu. Trains stop about twice a day; buses to Tallinn, Narva and Tartu are the real transport here.

Watch out

Safety

Jõhvi is a small, quiet county town and feels safe by day and early evening; the real risks are icy winter pavements, dark streets after closing time and the lack of late transport if you miss the last bus.
  • Only about two trains a day stop at Jõhvi; check the timetable before planning a rail arrival.
  • The railway platform has no shelter and the station building is closed.
  • The town is a working county centre, not a resort: evenings are quiet and some places close early.
  • Winter pavements are icy and daylight is short from November to February.
