Sillamäe is a former closed Soviet uranium town on the Gulf of Finland, 30 km from Narva and 185 km from Tallinn. Its draw is a compact Stalinist town core and the stairway down to the sea, not a full sightseeing programme. Most travellers see it in two to three hours on the way along Highway 1, or sleep one night at the town's single hotel.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: bus station to the central square or the shore is about 10 minutes on foot. Three local bus lines loop the town with a few departures a day; county buses to Narva and Jõhvi pass through. A taxi is the practical option for Vaivara station and outlying sights.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small town and safe by Estonian standards; the real issues are winter ice on pavements, unlit side streets after dark and the language gap outside the centre.
  • Vaivara is the nearest rail stop, about 2 km from the centre: trains do not run into Sillamäe itself.
  • The port is freight-only; do not plan on arriving by sea.
  • Russian is the everyday language for most residents; English is less common than in Tallinn.
  • Langevoja falls can dry up in summer: go after rain or skip.
