Shimonoseki is the westernmost city on Honshu, facing Kitakyushu across the Kanmon Straits. It is the fugu capital of Japan, the site of the 1895 treaty that ended the First Sino-Japanese War, and a walkable port town with a separate, quieter samurai quarter at Chofu. Most travellers pass through on the San'yo line between Hiroshima and Fukuoka; one night is enough for the core, and the city works well as a cheaper bed than Kitakyushu.

Sanden Kotsu buses link both stations with the port and Chofu (short hop about ¥170; Chofu about ¥340, 25 min). Most port-area sights sit on flat ground along Route 9 and are walkable; Chofu is a long walk, so take the bus. The Kanmon pedestrian tunnel crosses to Moji on foot, free, 06:00–20:00.
