Hachioji is a city of about 550,000 at the western edge of Tokyo, 35–50 minutes from Shinjuku on the JR Chuo or Keio lines. Its one headline sight is Mount Takao, a 599 m peak with a cable car, trails and Fuji views on clear days. The centre is a commuter hub with a compact vintage-shop cluster, a castle ruin on a ridge and a local ramen style. Most travellers come for the mountain and leave the same day; a night here makes sense if you want an early start on the trails or a cheap bed outside central Tokyo.

Getting around
Two stations do the work: JR Hachioji (Chuo, Yokohama and Hachiko lines) and Keio Hachioji (Keio line, with the Takao line branching at Kitano). They are a 10-minute walk apart, so check which one your train uses. City buses fan out from both stations to the outer districts. Taxis wait at the stations. A car is workable but traffic is slow and Tokyo parking is expensive.
