Yass

Stop for one night on the Hume Highway, or half a day from Canberra: Cooma Cottage, the main street, then move on.

Yass is a service town on the Hume Highway (M31) and Barton Highway (A25), about 40–50 minutes' drive north-west of Canberra and roughly 3 hours from Sydney. The bypass took the through traffic off Comur Street, so the town is quiet, cheap and easy to park in. Cooma Cottage, a National Trust colonial property linked to explorer Hamilton Hume, is the one sight worth planning around; the rest is a good main street, motels and highway services.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to reach Cooma Cottage (about 5 km south-east of the centre) and the Yass Valley. The town centre itself is flat and walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. Yass Junction station is outside town: you need a pickup or a taxi, so check the connection before you book a train.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet country town; the real risks are the drive (kangaroos at dawn and dusk, long Hume Highway legs) and summer heat or winter frost. Standard precautions apply after dark around the pubs.
  • Yass Junction station is not in town: arrange a lift or taxi, or you will be stranded.
  • Summer days can pass 35°C (95°F) and winter nights drop below 0°C (32°F) with frost; pack for the season you get.
  • Kangaroos and wombats on rural roads at dawn and dusk: slow down outside town.
  • Some Canberra–Yass bus services have changed operators or stopped: confirm the timetable before relying on it.
