Yass
Stop for one night on the Hume Highway, or half a day from Canberra: Cooma Cottage, the main street, then move on.
Yass is a service town on the Hume Highway (M31) and Barton Highway (A25), about 40–50 minutes' drive north-west of Canberra and roughly 3 hours from Sydney. The bypass took the through traffic off Comur Street, so the town is quiet, cheap and easy to park in. Cooma Cottage, a National Trust colonial property linked to explorer Hamilton Hume, is the one sight worth planning around; the rest is a good main street, motels and highway services.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Yass Junction station is not in town: arrange a lift or taxi, or you will be stranded.
- Summer days can pass 35°C and winter nights drop below 0°C with frost; pack for the season you get.
- Kangaroos and wombats on rural roads at dawn and dusk: slow down outside town.
- Some Canberra–Yass bus services have changed operators or stopped: confirm the timetable before relying on it.
A small, quiet country town; the real risks are the drive (kangaroos at dawn and dusk, long Hume Highway legs) and summer heat or winter frost. Standard precautions apply after dark around the pubs.
