Muang Xay (also spelled Oudomxay) is the biggest town in northern Laos and sits where the road and rail routes between China, Vietnam and the Lao lowlands meet. Almost everyone travelling overland through the north passes through. The town is small and walkable, with a stupa hill, a museum and markets; the real reason to stop longer is Chom Ong cave and the Khmu villages around it, which need a guided day or two. Most travellers use it for one night between Luang Prabang and Luang Namtha, or as a break on the long bus to the Chinese border.

Muang Xay is a quiet provincial town and street crime is rare; the real risks are mountain-road driving, the rough cave road, and walking unlit roads at night. Keep valuables out of sight and use a guesthouse safe where one exists.
  • The new bus station is about 6 km (3.7 mi) south of town: agree the tuk-tuk price before you get in.
  • The railway station is outside the centre; allow time for the transfer, not just the train.
  • Chom Ong cave is reached by a rough dirt road and a walk; arrange a guide before setting out.
  • Nam Kad waterfall is a managed site: private vehicles stop at the gate and you continue by site transport or bike.
  • Most Lao restaurants close around 21:00; the night market and some Chinese restaurants stay open later.
