Luang Namtha is northern Laos's trekking base, on the Nam Tha River about 3 hours by train from Luang Prabang. The town itself is compact and short on sights; the reason to come is the Nam Ha National Protected Area, where community-based trekking agencies run one- to four-day village and jungle walks. Most travellers stay 2–3 nights, or pass through in one night on the overland route between Thailand and Luang Prabang.

The new town centre is walkable. Tuk-tuks cover the airport, bus station and pier for about 10,000 kip. Mountain bikes rent for about 15,000 kip a day; small semi-auto motorbikes for about 30,000–50,000 kip a day with helmet and map.
