  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Ruijin is a small mountain city in southeast Jiangxi, near the Fujian and Guangdong borders, and the capital of the Chinese Soviet Republic from 1931 until the Long March set out in 1934. The sights are heritage villages and memorial halls, spread 10–20 minutes by car from the centre, so most visitors come for one focused day of red tourism and leave.

Getting around

City buses cost ¥1–2 a ride and link the station, the airport, the centre and the Yeping and Shazhouba sites. Driving is the easiest way to reach the villages, 10–20 minutes from downtown, and shared bikes work for short hops in the centre. Taxis and ride-hailing are cheap but sparse outside town.

Watch out

Safety

Ruijin is calm and low-risk for travellers; the real issues are summer heat and rain, patchy English, and thin transport after dark, so plan your last ride back to the hotel.
  • Most heritage sites are outdoor or unheated; carry water and sun cover in summer.
  • English is rare at ticket desks and in restaurants: have your hotel name and destinations written in Chinese.
  • Mobile payment (Alipay or WeChat Pay) is the norm; set it up before you arrive and keep some cash.
  • Some memorial halls close one day a week or for maintenance: check locally before a long trip out.
