Give Ueda one full day plus a night: castle park and Sanada history in the morning, Bessho Onsen in the afternoon. Skip it if you only want Matsumoto.
Ueda is a small castle town on the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Nagano, about 1 h 20 min from Tokyo and 15 min from Nagano. It is the Sanada clan's home town, and its second draw is Bessho Onsen, a hot-spring village 30 min up a local line. One night is enough; two if you want the onsen and the Mugonkan museum without rushing.
