Ueda is a small castle town on the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Nagano, about 1 h 20 min from Tokyo and 15 min from Nagano. It is the Sanada clan's home town, and its second draw is Bessho Onsen, a hot-spring village 30 min up a local line. One night is enough; two if you want the onsen and the Mugonkan museum without rushing.

The centre is walkable: Ueda Station to the castle park east gate is about 15–20 min on foot. City buses and the Ueda Electric Railway Bessho line cover Bessho Onsen and the outer sights. Taxis wait at the station.

- Bessho Onsen is a 30-min local-line ride plus walking; do not plan it between two trains.

Ueda is a quiet, low-risk town; the real issues are summer heat, uneven castle-park paths and thin evening transport out to Bessho Onsen.
