Deinze
Skip as a base: Deinze is a half-day stop between Ghent (13 min by train) and Kortrijk, worth it only for Ooidonk Castle or a Leie bike ride.
Deinze is a small East Flanders town of about 31,000 on the Leie river, 13 minutes by train from Ghent. Its own centre is quiet: a market square, a Scheldt Gothic church and a small art museum. The reason to come is the countryside around it — Ooidonk Castle, the Leie cycling paths and the summer swimming lake at Vosselare Put. Most travellers see it as a half-day from Ghent, not a place to sleep.

The centre is small enough to walk. For Ooidonk, the Leie paths and the villages, a bike is the practical choice; Blue Bike has a pickup point at the station (first 24 h free, check current terms). De Lijn buses reach the surrounding towns. By car, Deinze sits on the E17 with its own exit and free parking near the town hall.
