Landgraaf

Go only with a reason: a Pinkpop ticket, an indoor ski session or a night between Heerlen and Aachen. Otherwise sleep in Heerlen and day-trip in.

Landgraaf is a small former mining town in the Parkstad Limburg cluster of South Limburg, about 38,000 people, and it is not a sightseeing town. It has two anchors: Snowworld, one of the largest indoor ski slopes in Europe, and Pinkpop, a three-day festival held over the Pentecost weekend. Trains run to Heerlen, Kerkrade, Maastricht and Aachen, so it works as a cheap, quiet bed for the region rather than a destination in itself.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Getting around

The town is walkable, but the two big sights sit about 3 km from the station, so a bike or bus helps. Bus 25 stops at Snowworld; bus 29 runs to Heerlen and Kerkrade. Arriva regional trains link Landgraaf with Heerlen, Kerkrade and Maastricht, and DB trains run to Herzogenrath and Aachen. During Pinkpop there are no buses: follow the crowds.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are icy roads in winter, bikes and cars on the N299, and Pinkpop weekend crowds when buses stop running.
  • Pinkpop weekend: no buses, closed roads and full hotels for kilometres around — book months ahead.
  • Snowworld's steepest slope can be closed in summer for pro teams; ask before paying full price.
  • Some listed restaurants and bakeries have changed hands or closed: check opening hours the same day.
  • The Miljoenenlijn heritage train is an attraction, not transport: slow, limited and pricier than the regular train.
  • The station is unstaffed; buy tickets from the machines or in the app before boarding.
